This spectacular sterling trophy made by famous maker Dieges & Clust is the Poggenburg Memorial Cup billiards trophy awarded by the National Association of Amateur Billiard Players to the 1926 champion of this annual tournament, the young billiard phenom Herbert Hammer. This tournament was established in 1917 following the death of Justus Ferdinand Poggenburg II in January that year. Poggenburg was a New York City billiards champion, known as the “father of amateur billiards.” The winner of this 1926 trophy, Herbert Hammer, was a noted billiards player who gained initial recognition and fame when he won a major straight-rail tournament at the age of 12, that went reported by the The New York Times, headlined “New Boy Wonder Found.” Hammer’s feats at such a young age did not go unnoticed as internationally renowned professional champion Willie Hoppe scheduled exhibition play with Hammer while still a youngster at the age of 16. This ornate trophy stands alone in its’ beauty and detail. It stands 6.5” tall and just over 4” wide. The open cup trophy top is adorned around its’ rim with the symbols of the American Eagle, framed billiard sticks and balls and the raised likeness of Poggenburg appearing twice, beneath which reads on one side, “Presented by National Association Of Amateur Billiard Players 1926,” in raised letters and on the other side in ribbon scroll, “Poggenburg Memorial Trophy.” The cup is also engraved in fancy vintage letters, “Won by Herbert H. Hammer.” Four gold color tokens of the National Association of Amateur Billiard Players are set around the perimeter of the cup in a wreath surround. The base and cup supports are no less spectacular and includes the detailed figure of a billiard player and table mounted on the base, beneath the cup. The maker, Dieges & Clust is marked on the underside of the trophy bottom. Not only is this a remarkable find for any trophy collector, it is unparalled within the realm of billiards-a sport which traces its’ roots to the 16th Century. Comes with a certificate that unconditionally guarantees the authenticity of this item.
