Nik Kleinberg Biography

Nik Kleinberg began his career as a photojournalist covering stories for the world's top publications on subjects as wide ranging as war in the Middle East to the World Series.

He was enlisted to join Sports Illustrated as a photo editor focusing on the Olympics and Special Projects after a short stint as the Photo Editor for SPORT Magazine. While at SPORT, Kleinberg re-discovered the long forgotten Ozzie Sweet Collection and brought it back into prominence by producing a book based on Sweet's superb series of portraits, "Legends of the Field."

Nik became the founding Director of Photography for SI For kids and directed over one hundred lauded covers featuring the likes of Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, Barry Sanders, Bo Jackson, Mario Lemieux, Charles Barkley, Dan Marino, Shaq, Nolan Ryan, Steve Young and Ken Griffey amongst many others.

Kleinberg then migrated to ESPN and became the founding Director of Photography at ESPN The Magazine where he directed hundreds of covers and features that helped define a new visual language for sports imagery. His work went on to win top honors in the most prestigious international and domestic photography competitions including the Alfred Eisenstadt Awards, American Photography Awards and the Society of Publication Designers Awards.  Among the notable covers he produced was the iconic image of Ricky Williams in a wedding dress standing alongside a tuxedo-ed Mike Ditka with the tagline "For Better or Worse." Kleinberg evolved into a video producer/director for ESPN and ESPN.com where he was awarded three Emmy Awards and nominated for an additional ten Emmys.
