Historic T206 Honus Wagner Baseball Card The 'Holy Grail' of Sportscards

No single item in the field of collecting sports cards/ memorabilia is more universally recognized than the 1909-11 T206 Honus Wagner baseball card. As so few examples of this prize card exists, the card’s rarity and high value has been well publicized since the infancy of card collecting and the earliest efforts to catalog card issues. As folklore has it, Wagner was against his image appearing on a card produced by the American Tobacco Company because it projected a positive image of smoking to children. Other more dubious historians speculate that Wagner was really unhappy with the compensation for using his image. Here is a rare opportunity to acquire one of the few existing T206 Honus Wagner cards not residing in a permanent private or institutional collection. A recent public sale of a specimen sold in April 2013 for $2.1 million. Another specimen that is said to have been altered to improve its’ appearance sold in 2007 for $2.8 million. This offered example is well suited to a collector who values eye appeal more than any technical grade that might otherwise be assigned to it. Graded PSA “Authentic” this T206 Honus Wagner card has been altered as stated on the label in the encapsulation by PSA, a respected authentication and grading service in the field of sports card collecting. This card first surfaced within the hobby in the mid-1990’s. At that time the card was restored professionally to improve its’ appearance and sold at public auction. Upon purchase the buyer employed a conservator to work to “unrestore,” the card and bring back the aged look when initially discovered and introduced to the hobby. The card was subsequently sold and is being offered here in its’ new found original state, authenticated by PSA. The card’s virtue is strong visual eye-appeal beyond the customary flaws of some surface wear, creases and corner wear. The card exhibits good image quality, color, clarity and centering. The back of the card is “Sweet Caporal Cigarettes. The striking image of Honus Wagner himself is indeed one of the superb qualities of this card. While this card is not meant to compete with those few commanding record high prices, it shines among the few others that have garnered attention in the hands of collectors and investors over the last decades. This card is being offered to our customers for the first time. SERIOUS INQUIRIES ONLY.
